what happened to the new mods that were supposed to come out with it?

That will probably just come with the retail version as the mods would have been most likely dl'ed by people who have had the game for awhile anyway.

That's too bad  sad.gif   I'm surprised Epic hasn't done more to combat the botters, but they got their pockets full with the sales from this game so I'm sure they don't really care.

They have,

They are currently at UT2004 biggrin.gif

I stopped playing ut99 once 2003 came out primarily because everyone was going ZP and punk botters became rampant.

Btw, 2k4 Onslaught owns! But with all these damm real world games like bf1942 and call of duty, all these different games, it has greatly dilluted the online fps community which is why I think the ladders suck now. Before, it was only ut, quake and cs. Now there are tons of ladders. Bad.

Diekrupt

I agree, but it don't stop there. Not only are the different games spreading people out but the different game types within UT2004 are doing the same thing as well. Don't get me wrong, variety rules but the backlash to that can't be overlooked either. Does anyone remember when the older UT games would be so full (like the gib servers, CTF?) We have so many different game types and then we have UT community creating there own twists on the game engine and it is further diluted.

Many more choices. Everyone has got thier own thing going.

The new Windows will have a minimum requirement of 512 mb DDR. Of course it won't come out for another year or more most likely. In the near future, they won't even make 256mb sticks anymore. Applications are increasingly requiring more and more ram to run, and the mobos and ram prices are keeping up. I paid $160 for 1 GB of so-called "budget" ram, and it's fantastic. In a year or so, I'll add another GB, once apps start taking advantage of it. My mobo will hold 3 GB's.

It's to the point where 1 GB is just a decent amount to have, and 512 is minimum, except in basic word processors (office machines). But if you want to do any gaming, video editing, or any other "fun stuff", soon 1 GB will be the bare minimum, and serious gamers will routinely have 2 and 3 GB's.

w00t gotta luv technology biggrin.gif

Someone posted a pic of a new harddrive the size of a quarter. It holds 4 GB's. Soon we'll be loading entire operating systems on our wristwatches blink.gif

I think 1SB hit the nail on the head.

Actually it should do extremely well against the X800PE. I almost got that card then thought it would be just balls out to have twice the power of a already powerful card. Alone, the BFG 6800UOC is a monster and arguably the most powerful 3D card out right now. Right now on my current PC I have a 9700 All In Wonder 128. The new vid card is for the PC that I am currently building and I have been saving pieces for here and there starting the late spring and through the summer.

It is really hard to wait for the best parts when you want your new PC built yesterday but it is worth it. I have lots of fun just looking around for parts and deciding how I am going to go about building my PC. Such fun shouldn't be rushed. smile.gif

I know I went a little off topic but I guess I had a few extra min to rattle on.

I just got mine today from chumbo.com. Unfortunately it is being saved for my new pc I am putting together. I am waiting and hoping the Nforce4 with SLI comes out this year. If it does I might save up for another 6800UOC.

If you are thinking about RAM I would definately start with at least 512 as mentioned above but If you plan on playing games like EQ2, DOOM3 smoothly I would plan to get another 512 stick so you have a gig in your machine. I don't know what your price range is for spending but having a gig of memory is getting more and more important as more and more big name games start coming out.

512 will get you through for now but I will promise you that you will need to buy more in the near future or you will need to 1. play less system demanding games 2. dumb down the graphics settings.

BEST PROCESSOR-

Right now the best processor is the 939 socket Athlon 64. You can go to just about and 3D/new hard ware site (hardocp.com, Beyond3D.com, anandtech.com, tomshardware.com, Gruntville.com) and and if they tested the processors with the same hardware you will see that in applications the P4EE is superior. When you get to the Athlon 64+ series you will see they can handle 3D graphics much easier so as Soulo said it depends on what you want. If you are in a big company that is constanly opening multiple applications on PCs/servers then you want Pentium. However, if you are a gamer you want the 3D graphics AND not to mention the fact that the Athlon CPUs run cooler then pentiums so if you like to play lots that factor could help too. Also did I forget to mention you are paying about $1000 for Pentiums best CPU that is still chasing after Athlons best which is around in the $800's.

PCI EXPRESS-

OK, with that out of the way I can give you some info about PCI express. This WILL become the new standard I found the best explanation on PCIe from Microsoft's website and another from tomshardware for the gamers more in mind for that explanation.

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/displ...e_graphics.mspx

Another description from tomshardware

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040310/

HARD DRIVES-

As far as hard drives go dees_troy said "RAID won't really offer you any appreciable gains in performance in a game" That is true. Booting up will be faster, accessing applications (and transfer speeds as he also added) will be faster but it will not improve gaming.

SCSI drives are very expensive, heat up fast, and have very little storage space. If you want a fast hard drive setup with lots of storage space to the point of overkill for relatively cheap get 2 of the Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM SATA Hard Drive from newegg which was at about 1 week ago had them priced at $183.00 -$20.00 (mail in rebate)= $163.00 x2 drives= $326.00.

This setup will give you speed that is just as fast as the 15,000rpm SCSI Drives when you put then in RAID 0 (stripped) config.

It will be just as fast and have WAY MORE storage space. I think you get way more for what you pay with my suggested setup.

Thoughts?

Skinlab- Bound and Gagged my fave.
Tool
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Rush
Tweaker- 2 a.m. wakeup call- Not bad but time will tell before I can say it's one of my favs, it's my newest CD though so its getting good spintime.

Skinlab is currently my fav when it comes to getting me in me "game mood'

I usually listen to Pink Floyd or some Led Zeppelin when I need to work shit out in my head. It just calms me and is basically my musical Qualude hehe.

I saw lots of music you guys had that I have played lots of b/f. I used to play lot of BT and I saw some AC/DC in there which I like. For the most part I listen to classic rock and metal (new and old)

Anti-piracy campaigns are ruining gaming/film as much as piracy is.

Anything can have a backlash but I do not think anti-piracy is nowhere near as damaging as piracy.

I am not on any side of the fence just so you DL'ers don't misconstrue my posts. I am just stating that if I was working before the sun came up developing a game and walking out after the sun sets for years to make a game i don't think it would sit well to see my few/several years worth of work taken from me for free.

At that point I would just say "screw this, I'm jumping ship to make games on another box/pc that has a larger gamer following AND has better piracy protection.

In the end the game makers will go where they have a better chance at making money by the way of more potential buyers and to have thier hard earned work and livlihood protected from those who take without paying.

I have no other way of putting it.

Hopefully something changes that or in the end we will have no choice but to play on set top boxes very similar to the Phantom. I know it sounds really outlandish and basically fked but it makes sense if you think about it.

Here is a scenario that I hope everyone proves me wrong on wink.gif

No the industry is not declining, but the PC games are. There will always be a few that do real good but in the large picture of things it is not.

Lots of developers see games more easier to protect from pirating and more potential game buyers in a game box population that just simply overwhelms the PC population. More people people who own a PC or game box the more potential games sold, it is as simple as that.

Also factor in the fact that there have been more PC to gamebox game crossovers then ever and some are actually pretty decent (sans the graphical flairs and smoothness)

There are less PC exclusive games which may not be a big impact but it certainly doesn't help.

Moo-Milk:

You might want to check your info or let me know where you got it so I can read it. Sales of CD-ROM- based PC games dropped from $1.4 million two years ago to an estimated $1 billion this year, largely due to the growing popularity of consoles like the Xbox and Playstation 2 (Analyst Michael Goodman with the Yankee Group)

This info from the included referenced analyst from a very reliable company.

I would say a 1.4 to a 1.0 decrease in $sales in a time span of 2 years is in my layman opinion "a big fking drop of PC game interest"

or- We got lots of people who can afford the set top boxes

-or-/and- we got lots of people who like to play with no pay (read: Pirating/Dl'ers)-

OR BOTH

Plenty of developers have already moved to the set top boxes where the easier money can be made.

Whether you like it or not it is all due to the pirating causing the developers to jump ship to a larger fan based game boxes AND the affordability of the game boxes for gameplayers.

DOOM is a good thing even for the DOOM haters b/c the hype and excitement in the game and its graphics engine MAY cause a surge of renewed interest in PC gaming (which will even be further surplanted when Halflife 2 and even EverQuest2 come out)

Opinions AND educated info are welcome smile.gif

People are going to keep copying you can't stop it. This will also kill the PC industry, you can't stop that either. Lots of developers have moved to set-top boxes/consoles b/c it is harder to do the ripping with all the specialized disks not forgetting that more money is made from the set-top box end. Less risk and more people that have consoles than PC's (PC's that use more that on board graphics so that games can be at least playable).

If I had a crystal ball I would guess that there will be some kind of marriage between the PC world and console/set top box games and I think it has already been hinted at with a system like Phantom coming out which actually does have a chance at succeeding for a few years (like the Sega DC) with no competition for this year.

Anyway, thats my opinion (whatever that is worth). I agree with Nikon and those who backed him up but unfortunately we are helpless to the situation until the the mediums change.

It will change but I suspect not anytime soon.

Heres to hoping smile.gif

D O O M

I will be getting Half Life 2 but I am way more excited about DOOM3. I know it will not be like when I first played them on the PC (and on the N64 hehe) but I am still excited about taking a new trip through Mars and eventually Hell.

Multiplayer-wise: Hmm, I never really played Counterstrike so I can't run my KB on that topic but I will give the new gen of Counterstrike a go just to see what it is about. (I really hate the graphics on the original one so I already lost my interest on that game awhile ago although I can see why people like it by watching)

I am very curious about DOOM3 multi b/c I think the games will be more interesting with just a few people playing. Insta or no insta, you just don't learn as much when you don't have time to hunt and figure out your opponent. Huge multi games are fun to fck off with but spam/spawn kills are at a premium and you never get a good pace or momentum going (especially if there are lots of small maps peppered/voted in). I always liked 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 TDM/DM best. We will see in the end if it is more fun then we thought or it ends up being mediocre and forgotten.

Anyways, um yeah....DOOOOOM!! biggrin.gif

New members = new ideas or new problems.

I am sure I am doing my posting in a lighthearted way b/c I am a light hearted kinda guy.

Punisher, you may be tired of the new members and that is fine. Get to stepping if you don't like it.

By the way, from what I can gather, a lot more people on this thread seem to be more upset at the regulars (one in particular who has a avatar of a lego d00d giving the other one the reach around) who should have been here long enough to figure out how to make points in a adult manner.

The only one you can punish is yourself.
